A Modern Schema for
Bioelectromagnetic Medicine

Dr. Edward F. Block IV, Ph.D.

Introduction

Discussed previously has been the energy dynamics and the different cultural expressions of energy relationships as relates to the human body and healing concepts. This definitively shows that energy imbalance always will precede that of signs, symptoms and syndromes of illness in the human body. Also definitively shown has been the concept that human beings are directly influenced by the energies impinging upon them from their surrounding environment. It is the adaptability of the organism to these rhythmic fluctuations of environmental energies that determines the overall health of the body.

This segment of the series has the purpose of describing in more detail the development of the human organism from conception and the morphogenic fields that result in the dynamic energy matrix that comprises the human organism. This will complete the the series and present a Modern Schema for Bioelectromagnetic Medicine.

Discussion

The work of Dr. Reinhold Voll has given us means to treat various disorders of the human energetic matrix. His work is based upon the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically that of Acupuncture and the Meridians. But just how the meridians and the energy matrix of the body are formed from just one fertilized ovum is somewhat of a mystery. This mystery is explained to some satisfaction by the Chinese discipline of Qigong (chee kung). Qi means "life-force energy". Gong means "skill". Thus, Qigong is defined as the skillful practice of gathering, circulating and applying life-force energy.

Much of the information presented will in part be paraphrased from chapters 2, 4 & 5 of the excellent book by Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, Ph.D. entitled, "Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy: A Comprehensive Clinical Text", 2000, The International Institute of Medical Qigong, Pacific Grove, Ca, ISBN #1-885246-08-0 which is 3 inches thick.

  1. Conception

The sperm that manages to penetrate the cell coat of the ovum injects the haploid (exactly half of the total chromosomal genetic complement that is divided bilaterally at the centromere during Meiosis) complement of the father's genetic heritage into the waiting ovum. The ovum is arrested in Meiosis II. Upon penetration and injection, the ovum concludes Meiosis and union of the haploid complements sets the stage for rapid cellular division. The entry point of the sperm determines the basic orientation of future embryological development. A polar axis is created that results in an energy vortex in the ovum. The entry point of the sperm, in humans and all mammals, will eventually become the future anus. The first cell division determines the right side of the body from the left side. The next cellular division is horizontal to the first plane and determines the back of the body and the front of the body. These 4 cells already have the Morphogenic Field in place.

Qigong says that the first cellular division cleaves along the central Taiji pole. The area on the ovum cell membrane at the "top" side of the Taiji becomes the future Governing Vessel. The area "below" the Taiji on the ovum cell membrane becomes the future Conception Vessel. The first cleavage generates the left Yin & Yang Heel Vessels and the right Yin & Yang Heel Vessels. The horizontal cleavage generates the Belt vessel and the Thrusting Vessel (Chong or Thoroughfare Vessel). These 4 vessels are said to regulate the establishment of the entire energy system when cellular division occurs. As cellular division progresses, The Yang Linking vessel is responsible for the development of the exterior of the body and the Yin Linking Vessel for the interior. Each of the 8 Extraordinary meridians is said to have a specific role in the development of the embryo.

    • Governing Vessel- back
    • Conception Vessel- front
    • Thrusting Vessel- center of the body
    • Yang Heel Vessel- body right and left Yang energy
    • Yin Heel vessel- body right and left Yin energy
    • Yang Linking Vessel- body exterior
    • Yin Linking Vessel- body interior
    • Belt Vessel- binds all the channels together

These 8 are called the Eight Prenatal Vessels (8PV).

  2. Embryological Development

According to Dr. Sheng, at early stages of embryogenesis, gap junction mediated cell-cell communication is usually diffusely distributed which results in the entire embryo becoming linked as a syncytium (via the gap junctions). As development progresses, gap junctions become restricted at discrete boundaries, leading to the subdivision of the embryo into communication compartment domains. Gap junctions are discrete pores in the cellular membrane that allow for the movement of substances from the cytoplasm of one cell to the cytoplasm of another cell directly without needing to go through a cell membrane. Go to here for information about cellular junctions. It is the tight junctions between cells that allow for the movement of cellular sheets into ridges, folds and invaginations with cellular divisions. It may be hypothesized that it is the 8PV that determine the type and location of cellular junctions. This in turn then determines the compartmentalization of tissue domains and coordinated tissue movements.

The 8PV are said to form a vortex of energy in the center of the embryo body, the Taiji Pole, that will be located in the area between what will become the kidneys. The Taiji and the Thrusting Vessel are at the center of this vortex and will form the Sea of 5 Yin and 6 Yang Organs, the Sea of 12 Primary Channels and the Sea of Blood. From this center, Qi and Blood are said to be distributed at the energetic level through small channels or rivers of energy. This energy vortex may be hypothesized to create the morphogenic field for the growth of the physical form of the developing embryo via domain compartmentalization by cellular junctions. As the fetus continues to grow, so do the 20 channels. Nine Yang channels begin to flow out of the Governing Channel[Sea of Yang] (Bladder, Gallblader, Stomach, Small Intestine, San Jiao[Triple Burner], Large Intestine, Yang Heel, Yang Linking and Belt) and nine Yin Channels begin to flow out of the Conception Vessel[Sea of Yin] (Kidney, Liver, Spleen, Heart, Lung, Pericardium, Yin Heel, Yin Linking and Thrusting).

  3. Bio-Energetics

Man has the ability to sense many of the various forms of energy and fields that may be found in the environment: mechanical (sound, vibration, manipulation, impact), electromagnetic (light, electron flow, magnetic fields, heat) and chemical (odors, tastes, acidity). All these forms of energy play a roll in human metabolic dynamics. The energies of cellular metabolism and housekeeping are not the type that this article is concerned with. The energies that this article are concerned with is not easily characterized by western scientific methods. Previously discussed were the types of energies in our environment that result from the pulsations of the Earth to those found in the Solar System Interplanetary Electromagnetic/Gravitomagnetic matrix. It may be hypothesized that a portion of these energies may be utilized by the human body. It is these energies that are of particular interest. The energy relationships of the human body are said to be layered in several domains, from the internal core to the surface of the body. From personal experience, the author is able to validate the 3 layers that subtend the physical body and the energies of the physical body. The layers are as follows: the Taiji pole energy, the 3 Dantians, the Chakras and the physical meridians.

The Taiji Pole energy field is the inner core of the energy body. It is cylindrical in shape and runs the length of the head and trunk of the body. It is this energy field that allows the physical incarnation of the consciousness to take place. The characteristics of the energies located here are unknown but are discussed in Spiritual terms in Qigong Philosophy. It is described as a white light, pulsating field. At the time when the author was made aware of this field in deep meditation, the visualization that came to mind was that of the Pillar of Fire that preceeded the Hebrews during their wandering in the Sinai Desert (the symbology I was introduced to as a child). The Taiji is said to be responsible for absorbing the energy from the environment and distributing them to the Dantians.

The 3 Dantians of Qigong are the Upper, Middle and Lower Dantian. The Upper Dantian is (+) and the Lower Dantian is (-). The light from the Taiji resonates in the Upper and Lower Dantians and flows from the Governing Vessel as a Sea of (+) energy and from the Conception Vessel as a Sea of
(-) energy exiting from the Middle Dantian. The (+) energies are resonant with the electromagnetic energies of the Sun and Solar System. The (-) energies are resonant with the gravitomagnetic energies of the Earth. Both fluctuate with the respective energies and fields found in the environment as a dynamic matrix. The body thus has an encompassing electromagnetic field that is similar to those of a magnet and is toroidal in shape with the poles at the head (+) and hands/feet (-). The 3 Dantians then are connected to the 12 major energy Gates or Chakras. The word "Chakra" is Sanskrit for "Wheel". The Crown Chakra is a single Gate found at the top of the head and is responsible for absorbing Heavenly Qi and light into the body as well as energizing the Taiji core. The Basal Chakra is a single Gate found in the perineum and is responsible for absorbing Earthly Qi as well as energizing the Taiji core. The other 5 gates are said to be dual. The front Gates are connected to the Conception Vessel and are said to be responsible for the feelings and emotional activity of humans. The back Gates are connected to the Governing Vessel and are said to be responsible for the thought, will and determination of humans. The center chakra is located deep within the middle of the Taiji core and the Middle Dantian. The Basal Chakra is associated with the Gonads. The Sacral Chakra is associated with the Adrenal Glands. The Solar Chakra is associated with the Islets of Langerhans. The Heart Chakra is associated with the Thymus/Lymphatic Nodes and Tissue. The Throat Chakra is associated with the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands. The Brow Chakra is associated with the Hypothalamus/Pituitary Gland. The Crown Chakra is associated with the Pineal Gland. This is the basis for the "Humors" of the various medical systems.

it is evident that Living Organic Matter has the following characteristics:

  1. It is subject to the same Laws and energy/field interactions of all matter
  2. Living entities have evolved several means to continuously adapt to the fluctuations in the Solar System Interplanetary Field Matrix that has both Gravitomagnetic and Electromagnetic components
  3. Western science has detailed the various physiolgical, anatomical and cellular components of living systems
  4. The details of the role of external fields/energies on the processes of metabolism and integration of body organization is still to be worked out

A complete schema in now evident from the material presented above. The energies received from the environment that flows through a person does so in resonance with the matter and morphogenic field of the organism as a whole. It is the purpose of all the rheostatic (more correct a term than homeostatic) mechanisms of the body to maintain energetic resonance in harmony with the fluctuation of those energies in the environment to which the systems of the body are entrained. Any disruption of that harmony will eventually lead to the symptoms of disease and illness. The causes of the disharmony are known and may be counteracted by theraputic means. It is the purpose of the trained healer to affect a change in the energy dynamic of the body in order to effect a return to harmony.

What has been presented above is the philosophical underpinnings for the practice of Bioelectromagnetic Medicine.
